The Dos and Don'ts of Your Next Summer Move

May 17, 2023

How can you make a summertime mover easier? From hiring the right movers for the job to scheduling the transportation services, take a look at the dos and don'ts of moving in the warmest months of the year.

Do Hire Movers To Help

Movers can help at any time of the year. But in the summer months, a moving contractor can make it easier to navigate a hot, humid moving process. As the temperatures rise, a mover becomes harder. Even if you are physically able to lift and carry boxes, bins, or furniture, the added heat and heavy air can add a strain that you don't want or need.

Instead of standing in the hot sun, carrying containers to and from a van, the pros will tackle all move-related tasks. This allows you to stay indoors (in the air conditioning) and relax on your moving day.

Don't Schedule an Afternoon Move

Are you looking for ways to stay out of the sun and heat? While a summer day can get hot and humid at any time, it's less likely to feel uncomfortable in the early morning and the evening. Instead of a mid-afternoon move when the sun's heat is at its peak, schedule a move during other times of the day.

You aren't the only person who will try to schedule a morning or evening move to avoid the high heat and humidity. This means you will need to make your moving services appointment as soon as you confirm your move-out and move-in date.

Do Work Around the Summer Holidays

Memorial Day, the Fourth of July, Mother's Day, Father's Day, and Labor Day are days to cross off your move-day list. Most moving companies aren't open these days—and possibly the day before or after.

Even if the movers do have open spots on the days before or after a major summertime holiday, you may want to avoid these days. A late night watching July Fourth fireworks or spending time with friends at a summertime backyard bash will leave you feeling tired or sluggish the next day. This will make your move more difficult than necessary. If possible, avoid these days entirely.

Don't Forget About Fans

How can you (and the movers) stay cool during a hot summer day? AC is the ideal answer. But if your home doesn't have air conditioning, you've already turned the electricity off, or the constant open-close of the front or other entry doors is making your day uncomfortable, use a few portable (battery-operated) fans.

Do Stay In the Shade

Are you on project management duty? If you want to help the movers and explain where everything should go or provide mid-move information they will need, stay out of the sun.

How can you go outside as the movers lift and carry your boxes, bins, and bags, and still shade yourself from the sun's hot rays? A few easy options can make your move cooler:

  • Set up a tent. A pop-up tent provides protection for you and for the movers. You can also use the tent as a move-day cooling station. Add a cooler with ice and water or set up a table with frozen treats for everyone to enjoy.
  • Use a tree. You don't necessarily need to buy a brand-new tent to stay in the shade. Use a tree in your yard as a shaded area to cool off under.
  • Use a porch. Does your home have a covered porch space? Create a moving pathway that allows everyone to walk under the porch area.

If there are no shady areas and a tent isn't an option, find other ways to keep cool outside during a summer move. Again, portable fans can help. Along with fans, drink plenty of hydrating water, keep ice packs handy, or use a cooling towel.
